How to Get a CDL in Texas - To get a Commercial Driver License in the state of Texas you will need to be at least 18 years of age to drive intrastate, or inside the state. To drive Interstate, a driver must be 21 years or older and will be allowed to haul material between different states.

To apply for a CDL in Texas an individual must:

Go to their local drivers license office and complete the application for the type of driving they will be doing. Interstate driver fill out the CDL-4 form, while Intrastate drivers will need to complete a CDL-5.

Next you will need to verify your identity. Documents you will need will help prove you have a Texas residency.

You will need to present your social security number as a CDL can not be issued to those who do not have a Social Security Number.

You will then need to meet the self-certification of medical status by completing the Self-Certification Affidavit - CDL-7. Depending on the person you may need to present a medical examiner certificate.

All applicants must provide proof of Texas vehicle registration and liability insurance for all vehicles registered in their name.

Next, you will need to fill out the Supplement Application Texas Commercial Driver License Certifications and Record of CDL Examination.

Following this you will need to consent to being photographed, have your fingerprints taken, and provide your signature.

You must then pass a vision test.

Now you will take the knowledge and skills tests for the type of license and endorsements you want. You will also need to pay the required fee associated with each type.

The knowledge test is made up of multiple choice and matching type questions. You must get at least 80% of the answer correct to pass and be able to move on to the skills test.

You will then need to provide a commercial vehicle for the driving test. The vehicle must be the same class as the type of license you are applying for. Often driving tests can be scheduled online, however not all license offices in the state can accommodate a CDL road test.

Before you start the skills test, your examiner will conduct a safety inspection of the vehicle to ensure it meets the requirements.

For the skills test the driver will need to take an air brake inspection test as well as a road test.

The road test consists of the following driving skills:

1. Start
2. Quick Smooth Stop
3. Parallel Parking
4. Backing Up
5. Upshifting
6. Downshifting
7. Changing Lanes
8. Merging
9. Proper Use of Lanes
10. Right-of-Way
11. Posture
12. Approaching a Corner
13. Traffic Signals
14. Traffic Signs
15. Left Turns
16. Right Turns

Those who successfully perform the skills required will be issued a Commercial Driver's License. If you fail you are able to retake the road test on another day.
