How to Practice Humility
Humility has never been my greatest asset. I have always thought of myself as being the most important person in the world and wondered why other people didn't think so. Not thinking about myself less, but thinking of others more.
**Practicing Humility**
- Be greatful for what I have
- Helping Others: I don't mind helping others as long as it doesn't take too much of my time. So, I'll open a door for someone at a restaurant or let someone cut in line if I'm not in a hurry. I was talking to my sister and her husband the other night talking about things that drive us crazy and my Katey mentioned cleaning sprinkles on and around the toilet, so now I try to remember to wipe up my dribbles. But if someone would ask me to help them move or something like that, I'd be like uhhh I'm pretty sure I have to clean my toe jam that day. What I'm finding is even the small stuff counts. Doing simple things forces me out of thinking about myself and actually for a brief second put someone else first.
- Listen more: I usually tune people out wait for my turn to talk or a way out of the conversation.
- Ask for Help: This is one hardest things for me to do. I want to believe I can do everything by myself. I see it as a weakness if I can't do something and have to ask for help.
- Receive compliments graciously. This is a hard one. Generally, I will take a compliment one of two ways. I will either deflect the compliment. So, if someone says oh you look great today I will immediately respond with are you kidding! I'm so fat.
Or I will pompously take the compliment. So if someone says Oh you're really creative I'll look at them and yeah I know.
Now, the person took the time to give me the compliment and I essentially turned around and slapped them in the face. I squashed the compliment and it is not easy for most to give a compliment.
