How To Deworm Your Horse
ChannelThe Budget EquestrianDescription from the creator
Hi everyone! Today I wanted to share with you how to deworm your horse. It is a very simple skill that any horse owner can do, with a little practice!
To begin, every horse is different, and his medical needs will differ, so before doing this yourself, consult with a veterinarian if you have any questions.
Horse deworming pastes have come a very long way from when I started with horses. It is so simple now, and the medications are much more palpable to the horses, so they really don't put up too much of a fuss when it comes to the entire deworming process.
You want to be sure you are giving your horse the appropriate dose of medication, so make sure to have an accurate weight of your horse before you begin. Once you know how much he weighs, then you will need a dewormer. You can find these for about $2.00 for Ivermectin, and they are apple flavored, which makes it really easy to be sure the horse will get all of the medication.
Then you dial in your horses weight on the syringe, and administer the medication in the back corner of his mouth. I like to be holding my horses when I do this, because then I can control their heads while I am giving them the worming paste.
Once you have administered the deworming paste, make sure to praise your horse, remember positive reinforcement, especially when doing something like this goes a long way.
After you have completed this, make sure to throw away the tube, and look for any dropped wormer on the ground, because worming paste can be toxic to dogs, and you wouldn't want your dog to get a hold of any of the paste. Then be sure to wash your hands, so you don't have any wormer left on you either!
Oh, and as one final thought for you.....
There are many different ideas of howoften you should deworm a horse, and there have been studies that have been done that if you are paste worming your horse, it only needs to be done twice a year, we don't need to worm our horses 6 times a year, because that can actually produce worms that are immune, or resistant to the medication. If you have any questions about this, please consult your vet.
