How to train your dog to lie down using only the verbal command "Down". In this lesson, I show you how to train your dog to lie down using only the verbal command.
One of the most common techniques to teach down is using food to lure the dog into the position. This video shows you how to move past the hand signal so that you can begin just saying the word "Down" without having to point to the ground.
This process works by separating the verbal command down and the hand signal.
If you always pair the hand signal with the verbal command the dog will have to rely on the hand signal to understand that you want them to lie down.
Once your dog understands the hand signal for down start to use the verbal cue "Down" before you give the hand signal
Do this over and over again and then at some point stop giving the hand signal after you say the verbal command "Down".
Your dog will learn to predict what you want from them. Once they learn the down command, you can start advancing this highly useful training command.
