In this video, I show you how I begin teaching the sit and stay foundation exercises. In this particular lesson, I am training Sit and Stay with a German Shepherd. When you are beginning the initial sit and stay foundation training with your dog, you really need to be working in an environment where your dog can easily pay attention to you. As you can see in the video, I had to change up the environment so that I could get the focus I needed.
To train the sit and stay, your dog first needs to understand how to sit. You begin the stay process by increasing the amount of time the dog can stay for before being released out of the stay.
Once your dog can stay for a short period of time, then you can begin adding distance to the stay. I do this by walking away from the dog and then coming back to the dog and rewarding them. As your dog gets better with the sit and stay, start increasing the amount of time and the distance on your stay.
This video is part of my weekly training sessions.
