Verizon supports Wi-Fi calling on the following iPhones. iPhone 7, 6S, 6 and SE and you can turn it on as long as you have Advanced Calling active on your phone number.

Go to Settings
Phone
Wi-Fi Calling
Wi-Fi Calling on this phone
Enable
Enter e-911 address

When placing a call the icon will say VZW Wi-Fi indicating a Wi-Fi call and it will work in Airplane mode as long as you turn Wi-Fi back on and connect to a network.
