Pool shock is nothing more than adding enough liquid chlorine to maintain a high enough FC level to kill the organic matter in the pool. You'll use 1 gallon of chlorine to treat 10k gallons of water. Your target FC level is 12 - 14ppm and your CYA should be 30 - 50ppm. Add the chlorine in the deep end then sweep well to mix it up. Allow to filter for 8 - 10 hours later and retest to be sure the FC held at 12 - 14ppm, you lost only 1ppm of FC, and the water is clear. Make Be sure your filter is cleaned out and properly working.

Shocking a pool is a process, NOT an event. It's something you do, NOT a product you buy, regardless of what anyone has told you. Bags of "shock" at your pool store are nothing more than regular stabilized or unstabilized chlorine. There's nothing "special" about them. You can maintain a high FC level using unscented grocery store bleach which is exactly the same chemical as pool chlorine, just a bit weaker in strength.
