With Oblivion's character creation, you get to pick a sign to be born under. One that is very basic and helpful is the Thief.

The Thief sign is a very good sign. I buffs your attributes a total of 30 points, which makes it the only sign to buff attributes over 20 points. It also buffs luck, which helps with looting and combat. This sign has many uses, and is arguably one of the best signs in the game.
