Oblivion Modding Tutorial [Updated!] - Installing OBSE into Steam

You will need to unzip files (.zip or .rar) in order to use this tutorial - I DO NOT SHOW HOW TO DO THIS.

PLEASE watch the entire video and read the description. As of April 2021, I used my own video to reinstall Oblivion with OBSE and it still works (this time on Windows 10).


I have attempted to find some solutions to the OBSE not working issue that many folks seem to be running into. I've avoided Mod Organizer for this reason and opted for Wrye Bash.

If things aren't working, check your file permissions! OBSE requires permission to write to the folder where Oblivion is located!

Mod Utility Requirements:

Vortex has been reported to work, but I have not used it. I would suggest trying it, as well as some of the tips used in this video (such as modifying writing permissions) to get the mods to work properly. If you cannot get Vortex to work, then try Wyre Bash. :)

Mod Organizer (MO) and Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) seem to have some issues, so I have opted for Wrye Bash instead. And yes, I can't pronounce it to save my life.

Steps:

1) Install Wrye Bash for Oblivion

2) Install the OBSE Tester Script. This test script will go into Oblivion's data folder, usually Steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion/Data.

OPTIONAL) Install Unofficial Oblivion Patches not addressed in this tutorial. These are useful for fixing a number of Oblivion's main problems, but shouldn't affect OBSE.

3) Install OBSE by placing the three DLLs listed in the video/on Nexus in Oblivion's folder, usually Steam/steamapps/common/Oblivion.

4) Make Steam run as administrator by going to Steam's application, right clicking, going to the Compatibility tab, and selecting "Run this program as an administrator".

OPTIONAL) If you're still running into issues, go to Steam's common files, usually Steam/steamapps/common, right click on the Oblivion folder, click on properties, go to the Security tab, and click Edit. Check the box under Allow for Full Control for Authenticated Users.

FURTHER DEBUGGING) Go all the way up to the top of the Steam/ folder and grant the entire folder Full Control for all users, following the same steps as above.



A word on OBSE...

OBSE requires writing permissions - if you do not grant them writing permissions it will not work! So if you're running into issues, there is probably an issue where you haven't granted the right permissions.

I have done my best to find the most common ones, but every setup is different. So, if you're having issues, focus on granting every permission possible.



CHECK YOUR GAME AFTER EACH MOD YOU INSTALL. This will allow you to find any mods that "break" your game and correct it BEFORE you add any other mods.
