Hi guys it's Alize. Ok, so a few weeks ago I went to Toronto, Ontario in Canada and Drake tried giving me a call.
Unfortunately, my family had plans to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame.
And as I was walking through the "hallways" of the Hockey Hall of Fame all I kept doing was aerial after aerial. I wondered... if a hockey player asked me 'How to Do an Aerial' how would I show them how to do it. So this week I decided to break it down.
The Aerial is a trick used in a lot of activities including gymnastics, dance, cheer and even in kung fu.
An aerial is a no handed cartwheel. Basically it is jumping from one foot onto the other foot while your body moves in the same way as a cartwheel.
Today we're going to be going over the Aerial in 4 easy steps. The Dip, The Take Off, The Pull Around, and The Landing.
Step 1 is The Dip
Take however many steps you're comfortable with.
Step forward with the foot you're going to jump off of and allow the rest of your body to come with it.
As you finish stepping forwards, bend down over your jumping leg.
Shift your weight over onto the leg in front of you. Your jumping leg should be bent enough to jump off of.
Keep the back leg on the ground until you jump, which is the next step.
Ok pause...
Here are some Things to Avoid
Be calm and take it nice and easy. Don't try to force the skill by running into it. Some people may kick their leading leg way up high, then stomp down into the setup. This may feel like you're powerful while you're doing it, but it isn't. Its unnecessary and will cause you to rush things. Just control the timing of the technique by going into it calmly. Your feet should always stay low to the ground, as if you're walking.
Ok to review Step 1: The Dip
Step Your Leading Foot Out
Dip Your Upper Body Down
Open Up Your Arms
Keep Your Chin Up
Bend Down Over Your Leading Leg
Step 2 is The TakeOff
A few different motions happen at the same time during the take off.
You want to Jump off of the front leg, kick the back leg up straight behind you, keep your chest up, swing your arms up.
Do this all fast.
Arm Motions
Your arm motions don't matter as long as they keep you up. just don't let your arms dangle as dead weight.
Your front arm should simply raise forward in whatever way is comfortable, and your back arm should swing up in whatever way is comfortable. I like to lead the arm motions with my elbows.
Keep your chin up here. It may help to fix your eyes on something in front of you.
Ok to review Step 2: The Take Off
Jump Off Your Leading Leg
Swing Your Back Leg Straight Back
Lift Your Arms Up
Keep Looking Forwards
Step 3 is The Pull Around
From here, it's simple. Look forwards, and then pull your foot down in front. It's as if you're just kicking it straight down under you. The faster you can kick it down, the better.
This is the part where alot of people fall, or their hands touch the ground.
If this is happening to you then your timing is incorrect in Step 2 of The Take Off.
Here's a hint guys: If you keep putting your hands on the ground, you are not jumping up at the right time. And you're probably dipping your body towards the ground as you jump, instead of before you jump. Work on that part, and fix your timing.
Ok lets review Step 3: The Pull Around
Keep Legs Extended
Kick Front Leg Straight Down
Step 4: The Landing
Pull your leg down to the floor. Land one foot at a time. Since you're moving forwards, your legs will come down naturally.
Ok. Well that's it guys. I hope you enjoyed this weeks video. If you have any other suggestions or tips leave them in the comments down below. Also down below is something that looks like this. Please hit that too if you liked this tutorial.
