Flapper Valve Replacement

Diagnostic

Sometimes a toilet's tank may continuously drain into the bowl wasting water and causing the toilet to cycle over and over. Often a malfunctioning Flapper Valve is behind the problem. When the flapper valve or flush valve has worn out and can no longer make a seal it begins to allow water to drain into the bowl slowly causing the toilet to cycle. Given how a flapper valve is inexpensive and easy to replace it is recommended that it be changed when the valve begins to malfunction.

Parts Needed

To replace the flapper valve a new flapper valve will need to be purchased. This kit will include a flapper valve and a lift chain and can be purchased at a hardware or plumbing supply store.

Replacement

Begin the flapper valve replacement by removing the tank's lid, turning off the water supply valve and flushing the toilet. Once the tank is empty disconnect the lift chain from the flush lever. After the chain is disconnected pull both sides of the flapper valve off the pegs on the overflow tube. This should completely disconnect the flapper valve, which can now be discarded. Wipe the seat of the flush valve with a soft cloth to ensure a good seal. Take the new flapper valve and connect each side of the valve to the pegs on the side of the overflow tube positioning the flapper over the tank's drain to the bowl. Clip the chain of the new flapper valve to the flush lever leaving some slack, and test to determine if the flapper valve moves with a proper range of motion. Adjust the lift chain accordingly. Now turn the water supply valve on and allow the tank to refill. The flapper valve should completely seal the water inside the tank. Test the flush cycle and replace the tank's lid.
