If so your toilet is leaking and flushing money down the drain. The most common cause of a running toilet is a leaky flapper. The flapper is a flexible rubber seal that sits on your flush valve. When you flush, the lever lifts up the flapper letting a rush of water into your bowl. After the flush it falls back into place onto the flush valve, sealing the hole to your bowl. If the flapper is worn or installed incorrectly it can leak water from your tank into the bowl. If you flapper is worn or hard it’s time to replace your flapper. Various toilet manufacturers and models require unique flappers. The toilet brand can usually be found between the toilet seat and the tank. Toilet model numbers are often stamped on the inside back wall of the tank. To find the correct replacement flapper use Toilet Toolbox on our website, or call us and our team will assist you in finding the correct flapper for you toilet.
To replace your flapper, turn off the water supply to your toilet. Flush and hold the lever down to drain to water from your tank. Unhook the flapper chain from the flush lever.
To uninstall the old flapper, unhook or unclip the flapper from the flush valve. If the valve seat is dirty, wipe it off with a cloth or paper towel. Install your new flapper by attaching the flapper ears to the tabs of the flush valve. Attach the flapper chain to the flush lever with minimal slack. Trim any excess chain. Turn the water supply on and let the tank refill.
