1 Choose Your Company Name. - The most important part of starting a business is naming your company. If you have a name that you have selected, you can make sure it has not already been registered by typing it in the Maine LLC Search Tool.
2 Complete Certificate of Formation. - This is the official application for your company. You will need to fill this form out completely and if you have any questions you should seek the help of legal counsel.
Attach a check for $175 payable to the 'Secretary of State'
Add an extra $50 for the processing to be completed within 24 hours.
Add an extra $100 for the processing to be completed within 1 hour.
Send the check and Certificate of Formation to the following address: Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions, 101 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0101
3 Look in The Mail. - Your completed and authorized LLC should be in the mail within 7-10 business days.
4 Apply for EIN Number/Tax ID. - This is required for any LLC with more than one member or if your intentions are to have a bank account. Much like a Social Security number is tied to you personally, the EIN number will be tied to the company.
