Before we begin, let’s make sure you need to replace your disposal. if it’s leaking from the bottom. Thats a definite sign. If it just won’t turn on? Check the outlet, the breaker and the red pushbutton at the bottom of the disposal. It could be as simple as that. Once I had a disposal that stopped working because someone cleaned a fish tank and a little pebble got stuck and jammed the motor. It made a humming noise but didn’t move. Once the pebble was dislodged it worked like new.

If none of those things fixed it, let’s get to replacing it. I chose a middle of the road disposal. There’s a link in the description below. You get what you pay for. The cheap ones are loud, aren’t as powerful, they’re made of corrodible materials and have a shorter life span.

The expensive ones are much quieter, more powerful and last much longer. The one I bought was $180 and was the middle price point and I’m happy with it.

Tools. A few screw drivers, a pair of pliers a hammer is all you need. I do have a special tool that was given to me, again, this tool helps you lift and turn the disposal into place, we’ll see it in action later.

The first things we need to take care of are the power to the unit. Then detach the pipes coming from the dishwasher, if it’s connected. At this point it’s VERY important to MAKE SURE YOUR DISHWASHER IS TURNED OFF! Because if that things is going and you have disconnected pipes! It’s going to get really messy.

Alright unscrew the metal plate attaching the drain pipe. Then detach the drain pipe from the opposite side. These pipes are plastic, so it’s a very simple twist and it’s disconnected. If you have metal pipes you’ll need to use a pipe wrench.

Next disconnect the dishwasher drain hose. Again, make sure it’s not running. Also get a container ready because most likely it’s full of water.

Disconnect the hose and drain it into the container.

I will not be replacing the drain & mount. The old one is still good and so I see no need.

Now we are ready to remove the old disposal. Take a pair of screwdrivers and place them in the holes as seen and simultaneously turn them, this will release the tension and the disposal can be removed.

If you are re-using your wires, unscrew the cover plate and detach the ground, you may need to clip the wires too if there aren’t any wire nuts. Make sure you leave enough wire to reconnect them.

On this part my camera battery died. I ended up using my pliers and tearing through the metal to remove the plug. It took way longer than I wanted. If I do this again, I’m just buying a new plug.

Now connect your plug to the new disposal. If you have a retention ring, insert it. Then connect the ground, which is the green wire. Twist white to white and black to black, securing them with wire nuts.

Replace the cover plate and we’re ready to install the disposal.

This is where the special tool comes it. It allows you to lift and twist the disposal in one easy step instead of trying to hold it up with one hand and align the rails and twisting them on with screwdrivers. Like I said, there’s a link in the description if you want this too.

Now it’s time to reconnect the pipe and drain hose. I’m using the new rubber gasket that came with the new disposal. Double check that everything is secure, screwed in tight.

Plug in the disposal and if you did it all correctly, you’re good to go!

Congratulations! I hope I saved you some money. If you liked this video please rate, leave a comment about your disposal nightmare.
