How to Make Homemade Popcorn | 4 Amazing Flavored Popcorn Recipes
What is your favourite movie snack? I absolutely love popcorn and I always make it myself, homemade on a stove. When I was thinking of sharing how I make my popcorn I thought why not give you some amazing flavored popcorn recipes to make it more fun. That is why I am sharing my favourite flavours along in this tutorial for Caramel Popcorn, Chocolate Popcorn, Peanut Butter Popcorn and Salted Popcorn. Enjoy! :)
INGREDIENTS
Base Recipe for Popcorn
• about 2tbsp coconut oil or any other mild flavoured vegetable oil
• about 200g popcorn
Peanut Butter Popcorn
• 1tbsp heaped peanut butter
• 1tbsp coconut oil or any other mild flavoured vegetable oil
Chocolate Popcorn
• 1tbsp coconut oil or any other mild flavoured vegetable oil
• 1tbsp sugar
• 1tbsp cocoa powder unsweetened
Caramel Popcorn
• 70g (1/3 cup) sugar
Salted Popcorn
• some salt
DIRECTIONS
1. Start by making the popcorn. Take a big pot (5 litres or about 1.3 gallon) with a lid and place it on the stove on high heat. Once warm add two tablespoons of coconut oil and allow it to melt. Check that the oil covers the whole bottom of the pot and add some more oil if needed. Allow the oil to become hot.
2. Once the oil is hot add the popcorn just to cover the bottom in one layer of popcorn, no more. Cover with a lid and wait until the popcorn starts to pop. When the popcorn starts to pop you want to stay by it and listen to it pop. When you will notice that the interval at which the separate corns pop starts slowing down you want to turn off the heat. Once there is a little pause of one to two seconds between the popping of the corns you want to remove the pan from heat. Leave the lid on for another couple of minutes to just allow some more corn to pop before transferring the popcorn into a big bowl.
3. Divide the popcorn into four even parts (if making all 4 flavours).
4. To make the peanut butter popcorn, measure the peanut butter with the coconut oil into a small bowl and heat in the microwave just until the oil melts. Mix the peanut butter with the oil until you have a liquid like consistency and then pour over ¼ of your popcorn. Mix with your hands until well combined. Cover a baking tray with parchment paper and spread the popcorn over the baking tray in one layer. Bake in 150°C (300°F) for about 15-20 minutes just to allow the popcorn to dry a little to make it crunchy. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
5. To make the chocolate popcorn, measure the coconut oil and the sugar into a small bowl and heat in the microwave just until the oil melts. Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined. Then pour over ¼ of your popcorn.
6. To make the caramel popcorn, measure the sugar into a small saucepan and heat over high heat until the sugar melts and has a beautiful caramel colour. When melting the sugar make sure to stay by its side, once the sugar has melted it will start turning dark really fast. Remove the caramel from heat and directly pour over ¼ of your popcorn. Mix quickly with a spatula to cover the popcorn with the caramel and transfer into a baking tray to cool. You could also cover a baking tray with parchment paper, spread the popcorn over the baking tray and then pour the caramel over the popcorn on the baking tray. Allow the popcorn to cool before serving. For salted caramel popcorn sprinkle some salt over the popcorn. Be extra careful when working with hot caramel.
7. To make the salted caramel, sprinkle some salt over ¼ of the popcorn and mix well with your hands. Taste whether the popcorn is salty enough and add some more salt if needed.
NOTE. The measures above are to make 4 different flavours for the amount of popcorn in the base recipe. If you want to make just one flavour, then make sure to multiply the ingredients for the specific flavour by 4.
