Take the confusion out of naming your kitty with these tips for finding the perfect feline handle.

Step 1: Choose a human moniker
Choose a human moniker. Names like Max, Sam, or Olivia suit fur babies just as well as real ones.

Tip
Get a baby name book or look for names and their meanings on the internet.

Step 2: Suit their personality
Find a name that suits their personality or a behavior trait. Itchy is apt for a cat who scratches, Footloose is perfect for a wanderer, and Cupid seems like a good name for an affectionate kitty.

Step 3: Suit their physical characteristics
Pick a name based on their physical characteristics. Fluffy would suit a long-haired breed, Spot would suit a calico, and Tiger seems natural for a tabby.

Step 4: Use a pair of names
Use a pair of names if you have two new cats or kittens. Bambi and Thumper, Bonnie and Clyde, and Tom and Jerry are a few examples.

Step 5: Keep an existing name
Keep the existing name of an adult cat you're adopting, even if you don't like it. It will make the transition to a new environment easier and they'll feel more comfortable hearing their old, familiar name.

Tip
Kittens are more adaptable and will accept a new name more easily.

Step 6: Choose a practical name
Choose a practical name that is not too long or embarrassing. Remember, a cat's name is for life and shouldn't be changed later on.

Step 7: Pick early
Pick a name for your cat as soon as possible after bringing it home. They'll feel more secure in their environment and be easier to train.

President Abraham Lincoln had the White House's first cat, named Tabby.
