How To Replace Asbestos Siding Tiles
ChannelBlue Collar DIYDescription from the creator
Believe it or not, there are still hundreds of thousands of homes across this country (and probably a lot more) that still have asbestos siding tiles on them. And why not? They're very durable once they have been installed. They'll likely outlive you and me and our kids. So instead of freaking out, here's how to replace Asbestos siding tiles if you have damaged ones that need replacement.
The equipment to remove asbestos siding tiles include:
End Cutters - amzn.to/3bgFTGU
Stainless Steel Siding Nails - amzn.to/3drC97x
Wood Chisel - amzn.to/2UajHZd
Hammer - amzn.to/3a7P78a
GAF Replacement Tile for Asbestos Siding - amzn.to/2QD9K4B
Some will have safety concerns when it comes to asbestos siding tiles (transite tiles). Really, safety is just as easy as replacing these transite tiles. Asbestos is the most dangerous when it is crushed or being cut, like with a cut off blade or being ground on with a grinder.
For tiles that are cracked or missing, simply replacing them with replacement tiles poses very minimal safety concerns. You're probably more at danger from smashing your thumb with a hammer or having a nail fly back at you (which is another good reason to wear safety glasses or goggles!)
At the minimum, you should wear safety glasses. If you're concerned about the fibers, wearing an N95 mask will help.
When replacing asbestos siding tiles, be sure not to pry on the nails. Asbestos siding tiles are very brittle and can crack easily. So make sure once you get your end cutters over the nail head, you pull straight out. Applying pressure by using the siding tile themselves can crack them. Once you have the nail head gripped by the end cutters, pull straight out.
If the nail becomes to difficult to remove, simply snip the head off and then either remove it or drive it in when you get the asbestos siding tile off.
Most of the time, you have to remove the lower nails in the asbestos tile above the one you're working on. When renailing the asbestos tile, make sure to take it easy. Missing the nail head may cause the tile to crack!
