Why do we get upset with people?
It is because they behave in a way that we do not expect, or show us characteristics that goes against our own values and definitions of what a good person is. We are judging them.
So if we remove our judgement towards people, we will then remove the feelings of frustrations and resentment that’s so unpleasant.
A very effective way to help us NOT judge people is to always remember that a person is made up of MANY more things than what we SEE in our interaction with them.
For example, even if we see someone consistently behave in a terrible manner at work, we are still only seeing ONE aspect of them - at work.
A person is never one dimensional, we are all multi-faceted; and we have MANY behaviours and characteristics.
Even in just ONE day, we can go through so many different aspects of us - in the morning we might be grumpy, then mid-morning we might be cheerful cos we've had coffee, then we might be irritated at lunch because service was slow and we might in a bad mood in the evening because of traffic and we might be loving at night with our loved ones.
WE ourselves have times where we are rude, we are arrogant, or we are inconsiderate. And anyone who crosses our paths at those times WILL NOT KNOW that we are actually a nice person - we don't get to tell them that it was just a bad day, or that we were just stressed because someone we love was sick.
We don't get to tell them we sometimes behave badly because we feel insecure, how that worry about money or wonder whether we're good enough.
It is not that we should have empathy for people, it is that it is hard to NOT have empathy when we get to truly know someone. It is easy to judge when we only see a little bit of people and assume we know them well.
This is how we go from judging someone, to understanding that it is an act of theirs that we dislike, or a behaviour that we dislike, or a characteristic we dislike. It doesn't mean that a person is ONLY those things. It doesn't mean that the person is a hateful person.
We don't judge people not because we shouldn't, but because it doesn't make sense to do it. We don't want people to judge us, because we feel they don't know our whole story. So similarly, we can extend the same courtesy to people.
This way, we can interact with people whom we have a negative impression or feelings towards without hatred or discontentment, and that’s making ourselves HAPPY. So be happy, always.
