If your bounce rate is high, it maybe because of a site that isn't user-friendly. I'm going to go over some background on averages and what it is, plus how to decrease your bounce rate using 15 different strategies.
Bounce rate is when people who visit your site leave without spending more time looking at other pages of content. Either your content may not be relevant enough, the site isn't user-friendly, content is poorly written, or other factors could be to blame if you have a high bounce rate.
To measure your bounce rate you can use a free tool from Google called "Google Analytics". This tool will actually tell you your bounce rate percentage, traffic per day, and many other statistics about your website.
For you to know whether or not your bounce rate is high, you may compare it to averages of the other websites in the world that could be similar to yours. For instance, if you have a blog, the average bounce rate is 70-98%. Or if you have a lead generation site, the average bounce rate is 30-50%.
So before you freak out about how high you think your bounce rate is, you must take a look at how the industry standards are. But, obviously your goal is not to just have another average website right? You want to separate yourself from the rest to get much better results.
To help you with that, I created 15 ways to decrease your bounce rate:
1. Be careful with pop up ads. They can be very annoying and when people start seeing them, they may just leave. Although, one of the most popular blogs I've seen has about 3 different pop ups at least and still makes very good profits, staying way above average. It just depends on how you structure them. Don't be spammy.
2. Make your site very easily navigable for your users. Don't make them search for the search bar or have to solve a puzzle to find the menu.
3. Keep your site clean and use a good layout or theme. Everything should be organized and user-friendly. If you do too much, they may get confused and leave.
4. Speed is a big factor for sites these days. People aren't going to wait very long at all for your site to load before they hit that "back button". Make it fast!
5. Make your links, open in new windows. That way, they can go back and forth between the pages they're interested in much easier.
6. Provide high quality content for them to read. Your bounce rate will surely shoot up if you don't make your content worth their time. Your goal should be to end their search for the info they're looking for.
7. Make your website mobile-friendly. Over 17% of your traffic probably counts on it.
