Disclaimer! This is just what worked for me, I am not an expert

• I started at 8 months but baby #2 I will probably start at 6 months
• Sleep environment
o Pitch black. Blackout curtains
amzn.to/2WGIbcC
o Cool enough
o Hatch baby rest sound machine! amzn.to/2xJ9Xg6
o Sleep sack – becomes a sleep cue
amzn.to/35Pypcn
o No sleep crutches! Rocking etc. Paci is fine
• Huge key here is they have to be eating more calories during the day so that they can get through the night! Most babies are waking up because hungry or for comfort

• SCHEDULE! (see above for schedules we followed)
• Schedule is eat, play, sleep **make sure eating a lot and enough!* you have to increase food intake
• Wake. Talk to them , engage, tummy time, read etc
• Nap. At this age 8 months nap was 1.5-2 hours , 2 naps a day.
• Ok lets start with bedtime , more important than naps.
o Set routine! Sleep triggers.
• Bath, sleep sack, books, feed (not to sleep), song
o Put them down calm but awake
o No sleep crutches or rocking
o Leave room. If crying, wait 3 mins. Go in, no picking up, pat on back “mommy loves you but it’s time to sleep now” , leave again for 5 mins.
• Go in after 3 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins just to pat them and repeat your sleep phrase

• this is the part that’s really hard. Short term hard for long term gain. I had to call and text my friend to stay strong
o DREAM FEED – I would go in between 10-11 for a dream feed to get him through the night (can nurse or bottle. Through age 12 months I think, may have been longer)
o Should sleep until 7 am. If they wake before do the 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 min checking if still awake then you can feed again and probably means they didn’t eat enough during the day
o Same routine for naps. Minimum nap was 1.5 hours. If waking up at 45 that’s between sleep cycles and they typically will go back so wait and also follow the same checking routine. So if they wake up before the minimum nap time they have to stay in their crib until minimum time. If Carter ever woke up a little before he would wait quietly and rarely ever cried when he woke up.
o Huge huge key is that they are eating enough while awake. They will learn to not wake for comfort.

• Especially when getting on schedule you want to be at home and napping at home. This may be hard – over time they can nap out if needed but I pretty much always did naps at home. I also stayed close to home (within 15 min drive) so he would not fall asleep in the car. If a longer drive I would give him an ipad to stay awake- sleeping in the car will ruin naps.
**I know I am going to get a lot of questions about specific situations and circumstances and I will try to answer but please remember I am not an expert and I only know my own experience and what worked for us. If you have a real trouble case I would recommend finding a local sleep coach/consultant for advice
