When you switch carriers often times you will buy a new phone but now people are keeping their phones longer and longer so it’s not abnormal to take your current phone to a new carrier. To do that, you first need to unlock your phone. That’s what i’m going to show you today.

Before You Unlock Your Phone

Each carrier requires that before you unlock your phone your:
- Phone must be fully paid off
- Account must be in good standing
- Phone must not have been reported lost or stolen
- Phone must have been active for a specific amount of time. I’ll mention these timeframes when going over each carrier.

Have This Information Available

Each carrier will also ask for these 5 pieces of information before they’ll unlock your phone:
- The account number attached to the device
- The account password, or the last four digits of your social security number
- The IMEI or MEID number of the device.
- The device phone number
- If you're requesting an unlock for military deployment, your deployment papers

So once you meet the unlock requirements and have this information on hand, it’s time for you to unlock your phone!

AT&T

To unlock your AT&T phone your have to have used your phone on the network for 60 days.
Go to AT&T.com/deviceunlock and fill out the unlock form.
If you have all the information previously mentioned handy, filling out this from will only take a few minutes.
After filling the form out you will hear back from AT&T in two days with either a confirmation that your phone is unlocked or a denial. If you’re denied you’ll want to contact customer service.

VERIZON

Verizon recently changed its unlocking policy. If you bought your phone before July 2019, it probably came unlocked. All you need to do is insert a SIM card from a new carrier, and you should be good to go. If that doesn’t work you may need to call customer service for help.

If you bought your phone since July, you will have to wait 60 days, then Verizon will unlock in automatically.

T-MOBILE

Before you can unlock your T-Mobile phone, there are a few requirements you need to meet.
- your device must have been active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days if you’re on an installment plan and 1 year (or have $100 or more dollars loaded onto your account) for a prepaid phone.
- Also, you can’t have more than two mobile device unlock codes per line of service in the last 12 months

To unlock your device, you will call T-Mobile Customer Service.
If you meet the requirements T-Mobile customer service should have your phone unlocked right away.

T-Mobile Customer Service: 1 (877) 453-1304

Military Exceptions
If you’re in the military there are exceptions to each of these unlocking policies. You can usually get your phone unlocked at any time if you contact customer service and have proof of deployment.
