A crossover or step-over turn is a rollerblading technique used to change direction while gaining speed. You often see ice skaters and hockey players using it, but it applies to in-line skating as well. Competitive rollerblader Tim Phang shows you how it's done in this video.

Hi, I'm Tim Phang. I'm 23 years old. I've been skating for about 12 years. I'm from Arlington, Virginia which is right outside of Washington, D.C. I'm now sponsored by Universal Skate Design, and I'm going to be talking to you about rollerblading. Crossover or stepover is a technique used to change direction while gaining speed. You often see ice skaters and hockey players using it, but it applies to rollerblading as well. Basically, it involves a foot-over-foot action while constantly gliding. You'll use it to change direction really quickly, and like I said, also gain a lot of speed. It's something that a lot of people don't learn early enough, and when you're learning the crossover, you'll want to learn to do it in both directions, so you to your right or to your left. Eventually, you can also apply it to rolling backwards. When you're doing a crossover, be careful not to turn too sharply, because with aggressive soles, the sole of the skate is a little bit bigger, and if you turn too sharply or lean too hard, you run the risk of scraping that on the ground, at which point you might slide out.
