Struggling to control your speed or come to a full, controlled stop when skating downhill?

In this video tutorial, I explore 4 essential downhill stopping methods on inline skates and rollerblades (and also roller skates/quads): the Heel brake stop, Stepping plough, T-stop, and the Powerslide. Mastering multiple downhill stops gives you the versatility to handle various slopes, speeds, narrow spaces, and emergency situations safely.

4 Downhill Stopping Methods:

Heel brake stop:

Scissor your braking foot forward while keeping most of your weight on your back supporting leg. Apply and release the brake as needed. To complete the stop, sit down into a deep support-leg knee bend and extend the brake forward past your front wheels for maximum stopping power.

Stepping plough:

Start in a wide A-frame stance on inside edges and take sideways lateral steps with inverted feet (toes pointing inward, heels outward). To complete the stop, accentuate the inversion of your toes and increase your stepping cadence (more steps per minute) as you near stationary.

T-stop:

Place 80%+ of your weight on your front supporting leg with a deep knee bend and centre edge. Slide your lighter back skate behind you in a narrow stance to control your speed. To complete the stop pull the back foot firmly in at the end while deepening your front knee bend.

Powerslide:

Start in a scissor, transition backward, and slide your front leg extended in front of you. Lower your chest/stomach down toward your thighs as you transition to shift all body weight onto your support leg. If your sliding skate grips or catches instead of sliding, it's too heavy—bend your support knee deeper.
