One of the questions we keep getting is how to defend yourself against a knife stab coming downwards.

Knife attacks are extremely dangerous and can cause severe injuries. A knife coming downwards can be even more dangerous because of the angle of the blade. It can aim vital areas such as your neck, chest or shoulders and can cause serious damage.

A lot of people often attempt to trap the arm that is holding the knife. It’s an option, but it can be dangerous because it’s a difficult move to pull out without getting hurt in the process.

There are alternative options to defend yourself depending on the distance.

The first option is to try and kick your opponent in the lower part of his body and then strike him high immediately after the kick. This will stop the momentum of the knife coming down and give you a better chance of getting away.

The second option is to step in towards your opponent. You want to raise your arms high and come in with your forearms. This will block your opponent’s movement and jam him from stabbing you with the knife.

Practice these knife defense techniques with your training partner so you can develop your timing and your technique.

Keep on training for self-defense and you’ll certainly improve your personal protection skills.
