If a squeaky box spring is keeping you or your significant other up all night, this guide will get everyone back to counting sheep in no time.

Step 1: Tighten all bolts
Check the bed frame and tighten all the bolts, screws, and other connectors using a flat- or Phillips-head screwdriver, and a hex wrench if needed.

Step 2: Pad the squeaky area
Pad the squeaky area with either a small board or hardcover book to change the pressure point of a squeaky spring and eliminate the noise.

Step 3: Rotate mattress and box spring
Rotate either the mattress or box spring or both to change how the weight is distributed and, again, eliminate a pressure point that causes the squeak.

Tip
Get in the habit of regularly flipping the mattress and rotating the box spring for even wear.

Step 4: Lubricate connectors
Use a spray lubricant to grease the bolts and joints -- a squeak is usually caused by 2 pieces of wood rubbing against each other.

Step 5: Spray springs
Remove the box spring, gently peel back the felt cover on the bottom, and lubricate each of the springs. Use a construction stapler to re-attach the felt backing.

Tip
Ask a friend to help to avoid injury and to make the process easier.

Step 6: Replace the box spring
Replace the box spring altogether if the squeaking persists. A new mattress and box spring will last about eight years under normal wear and tear, and should be replaced to avoid back and hip pain later.
