why is my iPhone sending text messages instead of iMessages

In order to change the text message from a normal sms to iMessage or from iMessage to normal SMS in your iPhone what you do is go ahead and open "Settings". Scroll down and select "messages". Right now if you see iMessage is enabled in my iPhone. So, whenever will I try to send an SMS from this iPhone to another iOS device then the message will be send as an iMessage by default. But if you want to send the SMS from this iPhone to the android phone then you can not send SMS as an iMessage. So, in that case you need to send it as normal SMS. So, you can switch off this iMessage. Now the text message will be send as a normal SMS. So, if you want to again change the SMS to the iMessage, then enable this option. So, this is how you can change the normal message from SMS to iMessage or from iMessage to the SMS again.
