No photo needed for this one. Learn how to build a bold graphic art piece, a target with arrows stuck in the bullseye, using nothing but solid color adjustment layers and layer masks.
Aaron builds concentric rings for a target using Transform Selection to scale a circle inward step by step, then creates arrows from simple selections, duplicates and rotates one into the bullseye, and finishes with a hard-edged shadow for depth.
CHAPTERS
00:00 Creating Graphic Art in Photoshop
02:34 How Color Fill Adjustment Layers Work
04:31 Saving Custom Colors with Swatches
07:53 Building the Target with Concentric Rings
11:52 Creating Arrows with Selections
13:37 Duplicating and Rotating the Arrow
14:27 Adding a Shadow for Depth
THE STEPS
1. Create a new Solid Color adjustment layer, then use its layer mask, white to show, black to hide, to control where the color appears
2. Save frequently-used colors as Swatches (Window, then Swatches, then click the new swatch icon)
3. Use the Elliptical Marquee tool, holding Shift for a perfect circle, to select the target's center, then go to Select, then Inverse, to mask out everything else
4. Right-click the selection and choose Transform Selection to scale it inward, then fill alternating rings with black and white on the layer mask to build concentric circles
5. Make a selection first, then create a new Solid Color adjustment layer so it fills only that selection, building the arrow's shaft and feathers
6. Group the arrow layers, duplicate the group, then use Free Transform (Cmd/Ctrl+T) to move the rotation point and spin a second arrow into place
7. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to select a shadow shape, then fill it with a darker shade of your background color on a new Solid Color layer
