Naturally occurring sugar is the sugar that is in fruits - this sugar is packaged along with many beneficial nutrients like vitamins, phytochemicals and fiber. Added sugar is refined sugar that is added to processed foods like sodas and muffins. The Dietary Guidelines recommends capping added sugar consumption at 10% of your daily calories - so for a standard 2000 calorie diet that would be max 50g of added sugar per day. One 12oz bottle of Coke has 65g, more than your daily cap! To reduce your added sugar consumption you can read the nutrition facts panel which now reports added sugar content separately and aim to transition away from sugar sweetened beverages to unsweetened alternatives like flavoured seltzers.
