Learn how to give a subject a natural-looking tan in Photoshop, coloring the highlights and shadows of their skin separately.

A convincing tan comes from treating highlights and shadows differently, then dialing in the exact hue with Selective Color. This tutorial builds that effect step by step using Blend If to keep each color layer where it belongs.

THE STEPS
1. Add a solid color adjustment layer in a light orange, set to Color Burn
2. Use Blend If to make that layer visible only in the highlights
3. Add a second solid color layer in orange, set to Multiply, for the shadows
4. Use Blend If again to keep that layer out of the highlights
5. Add a Selective Color layer targeting Reds and fine-tune cyan, magenta, and yellow
