Description from the creator

Many people are unsure how to stretch right. We use outdated ways we learn in high school that often don't apply. Often times we don't realize what our goal is and often rely on for remedying various stiffness and achiness. In fact at times strengthening is the key to address stiffness and achiness in various muscles not continued stretching. To do a proper passive or static stretch the general recommendation is three times for 30 to 60 seconds daily in particular areas that are high risk for getting tight or losing range of motion. Prior to beginning a static stretching program a gentle warm up with five or 10 minutes of walking or stationary bike work will enhance the ease of the program. During all times you should have controlled even breath to eliminate the chance of muscle guarding that can decrease the ability to get a full range stretch and is ultimately more functional. We also want to consider that some stretching may be continuing and balance in our body and getting a proper evaluation to determine which areas are tight and which years are loose can be beneficial when starting a stretching program. Many people feel that stretching is elongating muscle but there is good evidence that we are simply improving the tolerance for elongation of the musket sure fascia ligamentous structures in the region. One of the key things we discussed was how do we incorporate stretching into our lifestyle. Tom discusses some simple ways you can incorporate flexibility during the many hours that we sit and stand for our jobs. These ideas originate from Dr. Kelly Starrett in his book Deskbound and I feel are powerful ways of incorporating mobility throughout our day. We also discuss how static stretching may be appropriate among other ways of preparing for sports and only during high level intense explosive sports do we see a decrease in explosive power following static stretching. In addition to stretching embracing moving every 30 minutes of sitting can allow improvement of mobility as you spread it out throughout the day.
