Ever wonder how magazine covers get that punchy color grade and logo tucked perfectly behind the subject's head? Learn both techniques using a Gradient adjustment layer and a Color Range selection.
Aaron adds a green-to-magenta gradient adjustment layer set to Screen blend mode for stylized color, then masks a logo so it sits behind the subject's head, using Color Range to select stray hairs so they appear to overlap the type naturally.
CHAPTERS
00:00 How To Stylize A Magazine Cover
01:24 Adding A Gradient Adjustment Layer
02:04 Cycling Through Blend Modes With A Shortcut
03:12 Customizing Your Gradient Colors
04:57 Masking A Logo Behind Your Subject
06:24 Using Color Range To Select Hair
THE STEPS
1. Add a Gradient adjustment layer, then set its blend mode to Screen so it lightens without flattening your darks
2. Click the gradient itself to edit its colors, choosing a light color for a stronger effect and a darker one for a subtler effect
3. With the Move tool active, hold Shift and tap Plus or Minus to quickly cycle through a layer's blend modes and preview each one
4. Bring in your logo or type, position it, then add a layer mask and paint with black to hide it behind your subject
5. Go to Select, then Color Range, and click on stray hairs to select them (keep hair light and background dark in the preview for a clean selection)
6. Paint black on the same layer mask using that selection so wisps of hair appear to overlap the type naturally
