Photoshop 2020 introduced the Object Selection Tool, a new AI-powered way to cut out subjects and objects with almost no manual work. In this video Aaron puts it to the test on three progressively harder images, from a simple subject against a white wall to a flock of pelicans to a busy, cluttered background, to see how well it really holds up.

THE STEPS
1. Go to Select, then Select and Mask, and choose the Object Selection Tool (keyboard shortcut W).
2. Choose Rectangle or Lasso mode and draw loosely around your subject; the tool will refine the selection automatically.
3. Hold Alt/Option and draw over any area to subtract it from the selection, or hold Shift to add to it.
4. Output your result to a layer mask, then clean up any rough spots with the Brush or Pen Tool for more precise, professional-quality edges.
5. For complex edges like hair, use the Refine Edge Brush inside the Select and Mask dialog to paint in extra detail.
