How to Master Smart Objects in Photoshop
ChannelPHLEARNChapters
Description from the creator
Learn how Smart Objects protect your image quality, unlock editable Smart Filters, and let you update multiple documents at once with linked objects in Photoshop.
We build two identical layouts side by side, one using Smart Objects and one without, so you can see exactly how much quality a regular layer loses when you scale it down and back up, and how a Smart Object avoids that problem entirely.
CHAPTERS
00:00 Mastering Smart Objects Intro
01:53 Prepping Two Test Layouts
03:39 Converting a Layer to a Smart Object
04:50 Smart Objects Preserve Image Quality
06:47 Applying Editable Smart Filters
09:19 Masking and Stacking Smart Filters
11:22 Placing Linked Objects
12:27 Editing One Source to Update All
THE STEPS
1. Place the same image onto two documents, keeping one as a regular layer and converting the other with a right-click, then Convert to Smart Object
2. Shrink both layers way down with Command/Control+T, then scale them back up to compare quality loss
3. Notice the regular layer turns blurry and pixelated, while the Smart Object holds full quality since it keeps a link back to the original source file
4. Apply a filter like Gaussian Blur to a Smart Object layer to turn it into an editable Smart Filter, nested underneath the layer
5. Toggle a Smart Filter on and off, or double-click it to change its settings, at any time after applying it
6. Paint on a Smart Filter's built-in layer mask to hide the filter's effect in specific areas, something a regular flattened layer can't do
7. Stack multiple Smart Filters together, like a Motion Blur on top of a Gaussian Blur, and change each one's blend mode independently
8. Save your original image as a PSD, then use File, then Place Linked, in as many documents as you want, so editing and saving the original updates every linked copy at once
