How to take care of self harm cuts | Selfharmerproblems
ChannelSelfharmerproblemsDescription from the creator
* Cette vidéo a des sous-titres en français ! *
•Steps •
Stop the bleeding
- Apply constant pressure to the area using a clean and dry absorbent material – a bandage, towel or handkerchief – for 10 minutes.
- Raise the injury above the level of your heart
Clean
- wash and dry your hands thoroughly
- clean the wound under tap water or with an alcohol free solution – no alcohol or hydrogen peroxide as it may damage the skin and slow healing
- pat the area dry with a sterile, or at least clean, towel or compress, but nothing fluffy such as a cotton wool ball – strands of material can get stuck to the wound
Apply a dressing
• apply a sterile dressing
• Many different types : adhesives ones like plasters, non-adhesive compresses with a bandage, small or big, waterproof, different shapes and so on
Keep the dressing clean by changing it as often as necessary (every time it gets wet or dirty). Should be replaced on a regular basis.
You can remove the dressing, once the wound has closed itself.
When you need medical attention
- If the bleeding hasn’t stopped after 10 minutes of continuous pressure
- You are bleeding from an artery – the blood is pulsing out at your heart beat
- Something is stuck in the wound
- If it long and/or deep. If the edges are split after pressure or you can see underlying structures like fat or muscle you probably need stitches
- Signs of infection
o Fever
o Swollen lymph nodes
o Pus
o Significant or worsening swelling, redness and pain
- If anything else seems wrong (loss of sensation, dizziness, and so on)
If you have any doubt on whether you should go : go! Go to your doctor, school nurse, in a pharmacy, in the emergency room, in a free clinic, call a clinic or doctor call line
Also think about tetanus
