Ever wondered how people can look up who took a photo they found online, even with no visible watermark? The answer is metadata, hidden information baked right into the image file. In this episode we show you how to add copyright and contact information to your photos in Lightroom, so your name stays attached to your work wherever it ends up.

We'll cover what metadata actually is and why it matters, how to build a reusable copyright preset, how to apply it automatically as you import new photos, and how to add searchable keywords so you can find any image in a massive catalog in seconds. We'll even show you a free website you can use to double check that your copyright info actually made it into the file.

CHAPTERS
00:00 Intro to Metadata and Copyright in Lightroom
02:10 Understanding File Metadata Basics
04:36 Creating a Copyright Metadata Preset
06:15 Saving and Applying Your Metadata Preset
08:03 Applying Metadata Presets on Import

THE STEPS
1. Click on a photo, then open the Metadata panel and go to Edit Presets, then Edit Metadata Presets
2. Fill in IPTC Copyright fields: the copyright symbol, your name, "All Rights Reserved," Copyright Status, Terms, and your Copyright URL
3. Add your Creator information (name, city, contact info) and fill in the IPTC Status Credit Line and Source
4. Save these settings as a new preset named after yourself so you can reuse it
5. Apply the preset to a photo from the Metadata panel, then shift-click other photos and use Sync Metadata to apply it to the whole batch
6. In the Import dialogue, choose your metadata preset under Apply During Import so new photos get your info automatically
7. Use the Keywording panel to tag images (like "portrait" or a subject's name), then search or filter your Keyword List to instantly pull up matching photos
8. Export a photo and upload it to a free metadata-checking site like metapicz.com to confirm your copyright info is actually embedded
