Great eye makeup can completely transform a portrait, and you don't need a makeup artist to pull it off. In this tutorial, Aaron Nace walks through the real principles makeup artists use, like eyeshadow placement, light and dark contouring, and shaping the arch between the eye and eyebrow, then shows you how to recreate all of it in Photoshop using layers, blend modes, and brushes.

You'll learn how to build up eyeshadow with a soft brush and layer masks, shade below the eyelid fold, add realistic eyelashes using free downloadable brushes, and finish with subtle highlight and contour work on the cheekbones and brow. These are the same techniques you can use for portrait retouching or full digital makeup looks.

THE STEPS
1. Create a new layer, set it to Multiply, and paint eyeshadow with a soft, low-flow brush.
2. Use a layer mask to keep the eyeshadow off the eyelid itself and control exactly where it falls.
3. Keep the inner eye lighter and the outer eye darker to open up the eye shape, and connect the eyeshadow to the eyebrow arch for a natural form.
4. Use Hue/Saturation to dial in a natural eyeshadow color.
5. Set your layer's blend-if sliders to let skin texture show back through the makeup for a realistic finish.
6. Create a new Multiply layer to shade below the eyelid fold, then adjust its color and opacity to taste.
7. Download free eyelash brushes and use them to add realistic upper and lower lashes in just a few clicks.
8. Use a soft brush in Screen and Multiply blend modes to contour and highlight the cheekbones and brow arch, then blur for a natural blend.
