How to Cut Out a Person FAST with Select & Mask

Got a subject on a simple background? Select and Mask can cut them out cleanly in just a couple of clicks, hair and all.

Aaron selects the background with the Quick Selection tool, outputs it as a layer mask, then goes back into Select and Mask with the Refine Edge tool to clean up flyaway hairs before dropping in a brand new background and a soft spotlight behind the subject.

THE STEPS
1. Select your background layer, then go to Select, then Select and Mask
2. Use the Quick Selection tool to paint over the background
3. Set Output To to Layer Mask, then click OK
4. Select the layer mask and press Cmd/Ctrl+I to invert it
5. Create a Solid Color adjustment layer below your subject for the new background
6. Click the layer mask again, reopen Select and Mask, and paint over hair and edges with the Refine Edge tool
7. Double-click the background color layer anytime to change its color
8. Add a Curves adjustment layer, invert its mask, and use a radial gradient to paint in a spotlight behind your subject
